Q:Hi! Just curious if Sim traits & Voice Sliders will still be present in Sims 4.
    [IMG] itscherrybunny
Hi, CherryBunny. Yes, traits and voice sliders will be returning in The Sims 4.

    Here’s the long answer:

    Traits & Voice Sliders
We learned from Sims Camp that each sex will have three different voice styles to choose from and you can adjust the pitch from low to high for each.

    • Female Voices: Sweet, Melodic, Lilted
    • Male Voices: Clear, Warm, Brash
    [IMG]
Photo: Trait slots and voice sliders (UI pictured is from Gamescom and subject to change)

With traits Ray Mazza confirmed you can choose up to five like before but your Sims will also be able to unlock special traits by completing Aspirations. Here’s what we’ve read so far about traits:

    Whims, Traits, Aspirations

We’re used to crafting Sim personalities with Traits, and those of us that played The Sims 2 even remember when we used to control their Wishes. The Sims 4 lets us get to know our Sims’ thoughts and feelings not just through Traits, but through Whims and Aspirations. Whims are like the thought bubbles that come up when Sims are out in the world doing stuff. They’re often something a Sim wants to do in the moment, like mix a drink or play with a chess set. Fulfilling a Whim grants the Sim something like Lifetime Happiness points to spend on rewards.

Aspirations are more long-term Sim desires, similar to the Lifetime Wishes from The Sims 3. A Sim might want to master a certain skill or career, or own certain items. Unlike The Sims 3, which limited players to only one Lifetime Wish, the Aspirations in The Sims 4 are organized such that every Sim can have as many as he or she wants. Once a Sim completes an Aspiration, they’ll get the corresponding Aspiration Trait that goes along with it. A Sim that becomes a master chef, for example, will get a cooking-based Aspiration Trait. —Meet The Sims 4, The Sims Official Magazine

    And the unforgettable Sociopath trait…

@raymazza Thank you! The Aspiration rewards from TS2 were great so I trust the traits will be just as much fun. Looking forward to more. :)

    The Sims 4 September 2014

Translation error or The Sims 4 release month?

Sims Domination spotted a difference in the translation of Lucy Bradshaw’s blog post for EA Brazil. The US version of her post has the official Autumn 2014 date we’re all familiar with but the Portuguese translation reads, “septembro de 2014.”

Whether this was a mistake that will be corrected or an unintentional leak of the official date I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. In the meantime, I think it’s safe to say that The Sims 4 will be coming out early Fall of this year.

Update: EA Redwood City changed the wording on the Brazil site from September to Autumn but doesn’t bother to explain the change. If Maxis has the courtesy to address the community I’ll be sure to let you know.

Sims fans, pay attention. The newest version of your favourite addiction will show improvements across the board, from improved AI to better tools and more intuitive, “hands-on” character creation. It’s hardly surprising to see that there is a new Sims game on the way, even as new expansions for The Sims 3 continue to roll out. And we’re pretty sure that the improvements to the title are going to amaze players the world over. —Gamecca February 2014

Well the anniversary has come and gone without any Sims 4 news or even a date when we can expect more information. The Sims 4 wasn’t completely ignored though —
SimGuruSarah changed her avatar on Twitter to use a Sims 4 Sim and they updated the Sims site with a blog post from Lucy Bradshaw.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME

To pull a page out of the book of clichés, I’d like to say that we’re getting better with age. I’ve been playing The Sims 4 every single day and our virtual little people are still learning new tricks. The Sims 4 knocks my socks off in a way that I haven’t felt before. The advancements we’re making to Create A Sim are fantastic. It’s easier to create Sims and you can personalize them like never before. It’s awesome to see what happens to my Sim’s emotional state when one thing leads to another in my game. The stories are so entertaining and I’m thrilled when I see how natural the Sims move and behave. It’s so believable, beyond what we’ve been able to achieve before. It’s freaking awesome. There are so many surprises up our sleeves, believe me when I say that Autumn 2014 will be here before you know it. Keep up with our website so that you don’t miss out on the latest. As someone who was there from the very start, this is dream realm type stuff for me. —Lucy Bradshaw

In spite of the fun, festive posts on Twitter I can’t help but be disappointed that they completely ignored the fans in regard to The Sims 4 not to mention the website difficulties. Like others, I still can’t access the official site and had to use a cached version just to read Lucy Bradshaw’s blog post. All of this down time and routine website issues do not inspire confidence.

The full blog post is under the fold.

This is quite interesting........................................... is it all just about sex........................... I personally don't think so.........

    THE SIMS
    (Maxis, EA Games) (2000)

Looking back at The Sims, it’s hard to believe that one of the world’s most popular family-friendly games created a stir for its sexual content, but it did. Despite the tasteful representation of sexual content and nudity (all of which was censored with pixilated boxes), some people still seemed to freak out at the fact that the light-hearted lifesim offered the opportunity to “woohoo” with other sims. The Sims went on to be an instant classic, and thanks to openly-gay game designer Patrick J. Barrett III, The Sims would even offer gaymers (gay gamers) the opportunity to have a relationship and “woohoo” with sims of the same sex. A first for video games. —Gametraders Live Magazine, Sex in Video Games

Just how much of The Sims 4 is going to be online anyway?
New GDC Session by Brian Bell is intended for software engineers working with online game architectures; experience in online (client and server) game development helpful.

Multi-Actor Behavior Sequencing in The Sims 4

As online gaming continues to surge in popularity, simulation complexity increases rapidly and aggressively multi-core platforms become the standard, decoupling game presentation from simulation becomes increasingly important. For The Sims 4, we’ve developed a novel model for rendering high-fidelity synchronized behaviors involving multiple actors, even when driven by a simulation that runs at highly variable and/or low-frame rates, and which potentially communicates with the renderer over a high/variable latency connection. —GDC 2014

Just how much of The Sims 4 is going to be online anyway? And more importantly will those online features even work…

I like the clothing options (mostly), especially the nerdy t-shirts. And yes, a crotch slider is def needed; the lady Sims look a bit deformed.

Hi!!! Its me again ! Just wanted to ask for your Opinion/Speculation of the first expansion pack the TS4 will have.
    [IMG] itscherrybunny
    The first expansion pack
Hi Cherry! I’m sorry, I thought I was caught up on all of my mail but I missed this. I think the first expansion pack will be something that enhances the main theme.

Like with The Sims 2 the first expansion pack was University which added a new life stage and The Sims 3 added new worlds to explore with World Adventures — life stages and the open world were both major features of those games.

But with The Sims 4? I can’t even begin to guess. According to Grant the main features of TS4 are: emotions, multitasking and skills so I think whatever it is it’ll expand on those somehow. That or something that introduces online and social aspects to the game which is the direction they originally wanted to go in with The Sims 4.

But I really don’t know… does anyone else have a guess or any ideas?

I don't know if this has been asked already but do you know if the patterns option from Sims 3 will be coming back for The Sims 4? I really loved all the customization put into The Sims 3.

Hi Bernice :) I’m sorry, it’s been confirmed by Graham Nardone (No Create a Style Confrimed) more than once that The Sims 4 won’t have create a style.

What options — if any — The Sims 4 will have for customization we don’t know.

Emotional Depth – For the first time, Sims feel and express emotions. Your Sims can experience a diverse range and depth of emotional states and are influenced through other Sims, actions, events, memories, or even by the clothing and objects you choose. Emotions offer you more choice by giving you the opportunity to create richer stories with even more possibilities.

    • There will be fifteen emotional states of varying intensity (the number is subject to change) that you can push onto your sims through their actions or the game will randomly though things like dreams.
    • "Extremes of happiness and sadness may lead to an early death" reported Platium Simmers so looking at the pictures above those would be the furious and hysterical states? And along those lines the PC Powerplay article had this to say, “If your sim is in an extreme emotional state, like being mortified, there is a chance she could die from embarrassment.”
    • Different emotional states will open up new gameplay options. Some examples given: workout intensely, take a cold shower, destroy stuffed animals, woohoo in the shower, dim the lights by clapping, talk about their problems, write mournful songs, write wonderful novels, paint sad paintings, and take a sad shower. source: magazine articles
Please Note: I cobbled this together from the various sources I’ve linked to previously but the game isn’t finished so everything is subject to change. Pictures were taken from the Official Gameplay Trailer.

More information on the GDC Conference on the 17th to the 2st March2014

Multi-Actor Behavior Sequencing in The Sims 4
The Game Developer’s Conference takes place March 17th to the 21st, and The Sims 4 will be present in the form of classes. Below is a description of what developers will take away from the “Multi-Actor Behavior Sequencing” class, the latest of three classes to be added.

    GDC Confirmed Classes:

Concurrent Interactions in The Sims 4

AI Postmortems: The Sims 4 and Hearthstone

Multi-Actor Behavior Sequencing in The Sims 4

Brian Bell | Senior Software Engineer, Maxis
    Location: Room 2020, West Hall
    Date: Friday, March 21
    Time: 2:30pm-3:30pm
    Format: Session
    Track:Programming
    Vault Recording: TBD

As online gaming continues to surge in popularity, simulation complexity increases rapidly and aggressively multi-core platforms become the standard, decoupling game presentation from simulation becomes increasingly important. For The Sims 4, we’ve developed a novel model for rendering high-fidelity synchronized behaviors involving multiple actors, even when driven by a simulation that runs at highly variable and/or low-frame rates, and which potentially communicates with the renderer over a high/variable latency connection.

Historically, such products have often made significant compromises, either by requiring their simulations to run at real-time rates, and forcing extremely rigid synchronization, or by limiting visual quality in critical areas like character animation. Our solution addresses all of these, and is capable of scaling across a variety of game types by offering a core framework for individual game teams to extend and customize.

    Takeaway

Attendees will leave this presentation with a working general knowledge sufficient to recreate a basic version of our solution to the problem of high-fidelity, multi-actor behavior in a game with a decoupled simulation, as well as specific solutions to common problems related to character animation in such an environment.

    Intended Audience

The primary audience for this presentation is software engineers who are interested in delivering high-quality, multi-actor character animation and other visual behaviors in an online or otherwise parallel game architecture. Prior experience with online (client and server) and simulation-style game development is helpful, but not required.
