Run up to E3: What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
We’re just a couple of days away from EA’s press conference at E3 2014 where The Sims 4 will have its biggest reveal yet. In preparation for the event (E3 is my Christmas) I thought I’d kickstart the hype by sharing my expectations for The Sims 4 at E3 and by telling you how I intend to cover the show.

    Expectations

My expectations for The Sims 4 at E3 are pretty high, justifiably so I reckon. Sims fans have learnt to keep their hopes in check over the past year with EA/Maxis announcing the game and then going into hiding for half a year but now is the perfect time for the developers to really make an impact, the release is just 3 months away. Now I don’t want people to think that The Sims 4 will get a huge amount of time during EA’s press conference to tell us the ins and outs of the game, we’re probably looking at about 10 minutes. In those 10 minutes I expect a gameplay trailer, some marketing buzzwords (oh my god, it’s both tactile and intuitive) and a holy crap moment, the thing that makes people sit up and pay attention (I smell online features). The presentation will just be the foundation of the information we receive during E3, the real meat will come from press interviews and features that will roll out across the next couple of weeks.

    The Plan

I’ll be covering major news throughout E3 and in the days after where news outlets might give us new morsels of information, I’ll (try to) put these together to create a whole picture. I might be a bit slow with news but it’s because I’m thinking about it, I can’t report as fast as some of the other fansites, they’re superheroes. I’ll likely do what I always do and try to give a slant on the news, rather than just reporting it. I’ll probably do a Q & A session if people fancy it, I won’t have any information that isn’t already out there but I certainly don’t mind discussing the game with folks. The show kicks off on June 9th at 12:00 pm PDT/3:00 pm EDT in America and 8:00 pm GMT, it can be watched here, here and here.

    Should be good.

OVERVIEW: THE SIMS 4 AT E3

The EA World Premiere: E3 2014 Preview is tomorrow! I think by now everyone has a pretty good idea of what to expect from E3 but if there’s anything you’re unclear about I hope this helps.

    WHERE TO WATCH

Just about everyone is going to be streaming the press conferences live — E3 is a big deal — including many of our favorite Sims fansites so you’re really spoiled for choice. The official outlets for EA’s E3 coverage are Spike TV, Twitch and EA’s own site ea.com/e3.

I’ll be watching EA’s Preview from ea.com/e3 along with some of the Sims 4 producers where SimsGurus Sarah, Russkii, Lyndsay, Houts, and Riley will be answering our questions during the live broadcast.

Some SimGurus and I will be watching #TheSims4 at the #EAE3 Press Conference Monday, June 9 from 12-1 PDT. Prepare your questions! —Lyndsay Pearson

If you can’t watch it live, don’t worry, the Sims Community has your back. Along with the official videos that will be uploaded after the event many fansites (including myself) will be recording everything for you as well. Between all of us you shouldn’t miss a thing.

    WHAT TO EXPECT

The E3 preview is an hour long press conference where EA gets to show off their upcoming games. This year they’ll be featuring six games (according to Spike TV) including The Sims 4.

How much of the hour will be devoted to The Sims 4 we don’t know but we do know from Graham Nardone’s blog post, Why You Should Be Excited for E3, that Rachel Franklin, VP and Executive Producer for The Sims 4, will reveal the release date and a brand new gameplay trailer during The Sims 4 segment. EA’s E3 site also promises “all-new gameplay”.
I expect the format will be very similar to what we saw last year at Gamescom which was Rachel Franklin on a stage giving a little bla bla and showing a video. For an even better idea of how the hour is going to go — and how much typically gets revealed about the games showcased — you can always watch last years E3 preview.

    AFTER THE SHOW

E3 is a three day event for industry professionals and the press — it’s not open to the general public and anyone who wants to attend. There’s criteria in place for each category of journalist including print, broadcast, and online.

So what that means is we can expect to be bombarded in the next few weeks with lots of interviews and special coverage from the E3 floor, print magazine and online previews from the press who attend. Those who were invited by EA to play a demo of The Sims 4 last month will also be free to publish their previews and impressions. Again, very similar to what we experienced last year after Gamescom. What makes E3 different from Gamescom is that the press should have access to a full demo at E3 and not just CAS. Which I hope means we’ll get the full picture of how The Sims 4 works and the reporters general impressions of the game.

After the event, and the resulting media blitz, the SimGurus will be allowed to give more details and answer some of the questions that weren’t answered by the press. (See: One way or another we’re getting answers. Probably.)

I’m looking forward to what tomorrow and the next few weeks reveal! I hope The Sims 4 turns out to an amazing game that makes us fall in love with The Sims all over again. :)

    Graham Nardone

    :52 Angry, Drink Throwing Sims

"Be it the way that you socialize with another Sim. You know, you start getting angry at the Sim. You get in a fight. You throw a drink in their face. That gets your Sim feeling angry. They really feed off of each other."

    1:28 Traits and Characteristics

"We have a variety of traits that you can select from. Kind of a few different categories that they come from. There’s emotional ones, that again, feed back into those emotions.

We have hobbies. We have lifestyle kinda ones and we have really social ones. And as you choose those and build the personality of your Sim it really reflects in game in terms of which interactions are available to them.

So let’s say I had a Sim who was a foodie; he really enjoyed kinda the finer types of food in life. He could instead of pursuing normal cooking, maybe he becomes a gourmet chef. And that unlocks a lot of different new recipes. And he can even find unique interactions on objects. Like, going on a computer and looking up gourmet recipes online.

So all that plays out in different ways in game.”

    2:49 Content

"More content than we’ve ever shipped in a Sims game before."

    3:18 The Gallery

"[The exchange] was a cumbersome process. We’ve really made that much more smooth experience for our fans in The Sims 4. So it’s entirely in game now. You can go in, you can still share the home that you’ve built. You can share your Sim family. We’ve even added sharing individual rooms which was something a lot of players asked for.

And it’s very simple and seamless. You just click on The Gallery. It pops up with all the content. You can filter it, search however you want, grab it and really within seconds it’s in your game.”

I disagree with you about the open world concept, I really hope they include that in TS4 and from the videos that are out there I think it is very likely.

I've seen this Ollie and Babs video a few times now and I can't help but wonder:
    • Is pinstripe suit guy supposed to be President Obama? Whoever he is...nice photobomb!
    • Is the gentleman in the quasi military uniform who claps and later is eaten by the cow plant supposed to be Kim Jong-un?
Just curious if anyone else picked up on it or if I'm just crazy. (And if this has already been discussed somewhere elase...sorry.)
