Maxis on the future of Sims: "If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5"
By Nick Wilson, 20 days ago, 10 Comments

The Sims 4 has been out for less than a week and Maxis has made it clear they’re entirely focused on the success of The Sims 4, before even thinking about the next game. On The Sims official forums, producer Grant Rodiek quelled suggestions for the next Sims game from fans with some definitive statements.

“We're not working on Sims 5. We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5.”

The Sims 4 released only a few days ago; our Steve is going to play it until his “eyes fall out”. While some passionate fans were giving suggestions to what could be added or changed in the next game, producer Grant Rodiek stepped in to remind them not to get ahead of themselves. “We're not working on Sims 5. We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5.” said Rodiek.

When later challenged by fans, Rodiek clarified that it’s “not all or nothing”, but that “something has to pay for 5”. Seems like how game development usually works to me, but it's strange to think of a world without The Sims.

Is The Sims safe for now, or could this be the end of the iconic life simulator as we know it?

I feel like this was posted before.
Just like any franchise, they need to earn some money from selling this game to be able to afford the start of working on a new one. If a certain series becomes unsuccessful it would simply be nonprofitable to continue making it.

I do believe that this was published as somewhat of a response to all the negative reviews they received on release.
'If you, as a loyal sim fan, do not buy our game, we still never create a newer version', eye for an eye, and all that.

Probably for the best, I would end up bouncing back and forth between 1 and 2. Depending on what their expansion and stuff packs are like with future load times I may occasionally play 4. (I'm just talking about the game from how I'd play in the future once it's not a shiny new toy)

I actually love Sims 4. Even though it doesn't bring as much to the table as previous games in the series, it's still a pretty awesome game. I think that once more content is released, Sims 4 will become more popular. I am fine with the content that the game has now. I never was one for a large amount of variety. I mean, I'd say the Sims 4 gives plenty of furniture and clothing options, but I like the simpler approach it has. I think that Sims 4 will be around a few years before they even think about expanding the series further, and I'm sure the Sims 4 will attract more people later on.

Even with all the complaints EA has recieved, Sims games are probably always going to be big sellers, considering the franchise is so popular. I'm not that worried, myself. ;) But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I actually really hope someone else creates a competitive game with sims. Maybe if they had some competition they wouldn't get so many complaints.

Watch this game be the best out of all when it has as many expansions as the Sims 3. Just watch. Yes I'm being optimistic, but people are too quick to bash the game when it hasn't even reached full potential.

The Sims is already a ground-breaking franchise, leading the life simulation genre. It'll be a good several years before anyone can even dare to contest.

That being said, The Sims can either flop now or continue to be the greatest hit. I'm hoping they'll get their head out of their asses and bring back a LOT of the withdrawn features. People will continue to whine and complain about the graphics but it's never about the graphics that makes the game but the features itself. TS4 is severely lacking in the feature department.

That's not to say much on my part though, while I am hurt about a bunch of the withdrawn features I still find little tidbits in the game every day I just love. I try not to make Maxis aware of that because it'd be 1 additional person unintentionally inflating their ego and promoting a shitty game installment.

I figure some competition would make for some excellent games. ( Maybe someone from steam will whip something up) Hopefully.

Sims is only so "excellent" because they have no one to compete with. If we were to compare sims with a very similar game then we would truly see how shitty sims is. Which isn't the fault of sims or the creator, but the fault of EA. And it's been a few years, more than a few it's been fourteen years; its about time someone else enter the rink.

My fingers are crossed. As long as the load times don't turn to shit then I think I'll be able to put up with the bugs they come up with and I wont regret purchasing the game.
