Speeding up my Sims 3 game

    I've been playing the Sims for a very long time so over the years I've collected quite a few of the expansion packs (not all of them though). However recently I've not been able to play the game as it's been so frustrating.

    It's stupidly laggy, and my game will jam on an image for a minute or so before resuming, only to do it again a couple of minutes later. When I'm actually able to play the game, it runs smoothly, but it freezes way too often.

    Does anyone have any advice on how to stop this? I love the Sims and I want to be able to play it again, but I've found myself getting annoyed and impatient when having to wait forever for the game to stop freezing.
