The Sims 4: Colors, Objects, Clothing & Emotions

To clear up a “common misconception” of The Sims 4, SimGuruGraham has tweeted out some information on how colors, objects, clothing and emotions will/will not work in The Sims 4.

At the risk of opening myself to a flood of questions that I can’t answer, I’d like to clear up one common misconception I keep seeing.

Being in proximity of color does not impact a Sim's emotions. Being in a blue room won't make your Sim sad.

Wearing a red dress won't make your Sim flirty. The Sims 4 has never functioned that way.

The Sims 4: Tidbits by SimGurus Graham & Ray

The new year is here, and simmers around the world are eager to learn more about The Sims 4. Unfortunately, we have not had any new info dumps from EA’s Marketing and PR teams, soSimGuruGraham and Ray Mazza have been kind enough to answer a few questions on Twitter.

    1. Galaxy Sims @galaxysimstwitt
@SimGuruGraham ello again! I wonder what the TV shows of The Sims 4? Will sims with The Sims 3 or The Sims 4? Thank you!

@galaxysimstwitt You may have caught a glimpse of it at Gamescom; the TVs will show Sims 3 footage, just like Sims 3 showed Sims 2.

Grant Rodiek said, “Of course!” when asked if custom content would be supported in The Sims 4. Assuming the modding community can create the tools that are needed do you plan on modding The Sims 4?
Will you be using custom content for The Sims 4?
    • Yes, I’m a CC junkie. I’ll be using ALL of the CC’s!
    • No. I don’t use CC.
    • Maybe. It depends on what the modding community creates.
    • Not at first. I want to play the game without CC to get the true experience.
    • Some. I plan on keeping my CC to a minimum this time around.

Polls seem to be a popular addition to Sims sites and I’m wondering if there would be any interest ina monthly poll for Honeywell’s Sims 4 News. Or if anyone would even see it to answer…

Would you be interested in a monthly poll?
    • Yes, polls are fun.
    • No, probably not.
    • It depends on the questions.

    The Sims 4 Body Shapes

I’m impressed with the variety of body shapes you can create and think they’re all fairly well done. Love the little bit of a fat role on the overweight model and the ribs showing on the thin… just really well done.

This is a little off topic as it isn’t news per se, more a general observation about the look of the town in The Sims 4. A piece of concept art for The Sims 4 is available as an in-game decor item in The Sims 3: Into the Future, the picture is entitled ‘Riviera’, which immediately makes people think of the French or Italian Riviera. However the look of the town so far definitely seems to be based on Louisiana, just like in the Disney film The Princess and the Frog. Looking at the images released so far from the game and comparing them with stills and concept art from The Princess and the Frog could offer a sense of the tone they are aiming for in the new world.

From columns to the strip of greenery in the middle of the road the images contain lots of similarities.

The above image is some concept art from an earlier version of The Sims 4, which they have obviously retained some features from. The venue in the art from TS4 almost looks like a modernised version of the concept art from The Princess and the Frog.

Downtown New Orleans from The Princess and the Frog and the Riviera concept art available in Into the Future. Here Riviera looks like a cross between New Orleans and a modern European town.

The Reason I’m commenting on the look of the town is because I admire the fact that they’ve gone for something as stylised as the rest of the aesthetics in The Sims 4. They could just have easily have gone for a more ‘vanilla’ style town like Sunset Valley in The Sims 3. I’m not entirely convinced that this will be the only town available in the base game however, mostly because Maxis are back on board and The Sims 2 had 3 original towns to choose from but also because the town in the background of the UI image looks more like an old English town rather than good ol’ New Orleans (they could be from different stages of development though).

As usual, we’ll have to wait to find out.

    Leaked Sims 4 Concept Art
Posted on December 26, 2013 by Nick
Disclaimer: as this is a leak, there has been no official response on the images provided, however EA has taken action and removed posts containing these images so we have reason to believe that these images may be real and are some pieces of (old, or current) concept art for The Sims 4. Read on with caution!

Tony Ianiro, who is the Concept Artist and Visual Developer for The Sims 4, has been publishing pieces of artwork in his portfolio which can be found online. Recently, his porfolio has been made private since fansites have ben posting about his work, but thanks to our community forums, the images live on. Have a look and let us know what you think in the comments section below!

The Sims 4 Riviera: we have already seen some official concept art for The Sims 4 World, Riviera, and this new piece of concept art looks very similar in style! Take a look at the leaked image (right), and the official piece (right).

Woodworking in The Sims 4: woodworking has been confirmed as a skill in The Sims 4, so this could be concept art related to the skill.

More The Sims 4 Concept Art: these are all the other leaked images found in Tony’s portfolio. Let us know if you like or dislike what you see, and if you think these are real or not!

If you can get a bald head into TS3 can you not give us even a timeline for updates without revealing the taboo!?

Hah no, none of this is in our job description. When you see a guru chatting on twitter, posting on the forums, etc it's usually of their own volition. Sure we sometimes do twitter takeovers or write a blog about a product that's part of marketing, but by and large it's just people doing it because they want to. For example, those big guides I wrote on the forums for the seasonal lot markers, or the houseboats, was just because I thought they were really cool (but complicated) features that I worked on that I thought fans would really enjoy learning the ins and outs of. Nobody told me to go write those up, the majority of it I do on my own free time away from the office. Something many people are likely unaware of is that most of the gurus that you get to chat with aren't in leadership positions on the team... we're just developers working on our assigned areas. That's especially true in the case of disciplines that aren't producers, they're likely people in positions you would never hear from on other development teams. Something that I really love and appreciate about The Sims Studio is that everyone on the team is not only allowed, but encouraged to have a voice, be it in the design of the game itself, or being allowed to just go out and chat with fans about what we're working on. Back when I started talking to fans I was an entry level producer with the least seniority on the team.

You can thank SimGuruShannon for getting us all involved in more community interaction. Back when I joined the team there was a general sense of frustration amongst the devs that we'd lost our close connection with the fans because so much of what we said had to become official statements that went through PR, got localized into the different regions the game is released in, get reposted by various community managers around the world... it just became a huge drag and could take weeks before something we wanted to say would actually get out there. She started up her twitter account to get back to directly chatting with fans and got a bunch of the rest of us involved and it just snowballed from there. It's grown to the point where our marketing and PR teams took notice of it and wanted to loop back in on what we were doing, but I think everyone there recognizes the importance of trusting us and allowing some general autonomy in our posting. Why follow 20 different gurus on twitter if we're all posting the same thing or just advertising to you?

I personally enjoy doing this because I'm very passionate about video games and the game industry itself, and I like discussing both of those things. I relate to Sims fans because I've done the same thing all of you do for other games that I've loved in the past. I try to share tidbits that give people a sense of our studio's culture, or the weird things that happen during game development, or the rational behind some of the decisions we make that don't seem to make sense on the surface. Sometimes when I see fans are upset about something I'll go and talk about it with them as well... it's easy for us to get a bad rap because there's no way you can see the full picture of why things happen. We truly do have a fantastic team of developers here though, so I care about going to bat for them and defending them if people aren't properly framing a critique. It helps me as well; I think it makes me better at my job. I get a good sense of what Sims fans are interested in, I get immediate feedback from people about what we're doing right and what people want us to improve. Part of what a producer is responsible for is keeping us on budget and on time by making difficult decisions during development. We're also responsible for driving quality while working within those parameters, and being an advocate for our players so that we deliver a great game. It's that second part that staying in touch with fans really helps me with.

Now in regards to seeing more of Sims 4, people are just going to have to be patient for a bit. Being given the freedom to go out and just chat with fans on our own comes with the understanding that we post responsibly and don't leak out information before our PR and marketing teams are ready to discuss it. It's great that we can talk like this, but remember there's still a multi million dollar marketing campaign behind this entire thing. Just like our friends in marketing need to work with us to present an accurate representation of what The Sims 4 really is, we need to work with marketing and allow them to unveil the game on the schedule they've researched and planned. There has to be that level of trust and respect between different departments for this whole shebang to work. Once they blow the lid off more features I generally get to come in and chat about all the little details of those features that wouldn't get discussed in big marketing beats; they're generally focused on a broad reach across a wide audience, so they stay pretty high level so that their message is easily digested. I know that all those little details comprise exactly what the big Sims fans love to know about though, so I'll be happy to answer more questions about the game once we get to that point [IMG]

    The Sims 4 Relationship Refresher

    Friends and Lovers

In The Sims 4, players will now be able to develop relationships, romances, or both. There is a “relationship” bar that tracks how well your Sim knows another Sim, which has been seen in previous iterations of the game, but now The Sims 4 introduces a separate “romance” bar. This is independent of the “relationship” bar, and it allows your Sims to develop romance specific relations with other Sims. If a one-night rendezvous is what your Sim is after they can live their life hopping from one bedroom to the next, WooHooing with Sims they barely know — if the chemistry is there. These new romantic relationships are characterized in modern terms. Meet The Sims 4The Sims Official Magazine

    Building Relationships

The Sims 4 offers more complex relationships with your fellow neighbors, as producer Ryan Vaughan explains.

"Relationships are a big part of the game. It’s important in The Sims 4 how your Sims interact with the other Sims around them, and the emotional states that they go through and how that affects the relationship." So instead of one relationship bar that can grow incrementally through friendship and into a romantic bond, The Sims 4 has two concurrent bars — romance and friendship. This offers the possibility of soul mates — couple that max out both meters — while the balance could be swayed so that, in theory, you have a friend-with-woohoo-benefits deal with someone you know. Simified: Can we have baby showers and other parties?
Grant: With The Sims 4 there will be this great new goal based events system that will allow for various types of events. Can’t say if baby showers are included with this, but your Sim could setup parties such as a “Singles Event” which would gather all single Sims in the neighborhood. Careers will also use this new events system too, so if your Sim is a Chef for example, Chef’s will have special event dinners to attend where that helps relationship with their boss as well as job performance.

No mention of other types of parties like house party, birthday party, baby shower; but what is mention is “Single Event” which gather all single Sims in the neighborhood. Also, Careers using this new event system to increase relationships and job performance.
